Join us for a 3 session series of Trauma Informed Yoga led by Andrea Towler of Healing Together Yoga. 

Sessions include: 

  • Mindful movement practice using evidence-based Trauma Sensitive yoga protocol for CPSTD

  • Teachings from classical yoga philosophy

  • Current research in the field of trauma

  • Build mindfulness, body awareness, emotional balance, self-compassion & decision making

ABOUT

Healing Together Yoga was founded with the intention of supporting women with histories of
interpersonal and developmental trauma (Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder – CPTSD) in the Hamilton community. It now offers yoga programming as an adjunctive treatment for CPTSD for both men and women, incorporating trauma informed mindful movement, teachings from classical yoga philosophy, and current research in the field of trauma.

The Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) protocol is an evidence-based approach which focuses on the development of body awareness and empowerment through decision-making. A landmark study of this protocol was published in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry in 2014 by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the worlds’ leading experts in the field of trauma, and David Emerson, who originally developed this protocol through his work as social worker and yoga teacher with Vietnam war veterans and in womens’ shelters. This study involved women with histories of childhood abuse, diagnoses of CPTSD and several years of more conventional talk therapy including CBT without improvement. By the end of the 10 week study, participants’ symptoms had improved to the point that over half of the women no longer qualified for the diagnosis of PTSD. This protocol is at the core of the
Healing Together Yoga mindful movement practice.

Along with mindful movement, Healing Together Yoga offers an overview of current research in the field of trauma, with the intention of empowering participants through knowledge. Teachings from classical yoga philosophy provide a model of holistic healing that is inherently hopeful and can help guide and inspire us all on our journey of healing and spiritual growth. Through mindful movement, teachings from classical yoga philosophy and current research in the field of trauma, Healing Together Yoga programming aims to strengthen mindfulness, body awareness, self-compassion, emotional balance and
decision-making abilities.

Healing Together Yoga founder Andrea Towler is a student of classical yoga in the tradition of Sri Vidya, with 10 years teaching experience in the Hamilton community. She has completed 40 hours of training in the TCTSY protocol with David Emerson and Jenn Turner from the Trauma Center in Boston, which inspired her to bring this approach to the Hamilton community, offering drop in and registered programing through the Native Womens’ Centre as well as through various non-profit agencies and yoga studios in the community, including Body Brave.
